2022 Rosé Vin de Soif
Silver, 2024 Experience Rosé Competition
Vin de Soif translates as “easy drinking” or “thirst quenching” in French; essentially a wine designed to “refresh the drinker.” But this wine takes rosé a step further, delivering a double-edged, more sophisticated approach. This is not the super crisp, “stainless-steel evoking” typical rosé we’re all used to. It was designed to offer something more.
It started with the fruit. Super high quality and all sourced from a noted vineyard on the Wahluke Slope; Zinfandel dominant but also including Primativo and Petit Syrah. All three having been picked in the same window of time and then all co-fermented together, en masse.
And in an added twist, to provide for some oxygen transfer and the roundness and body it imparts, this wine was finished in extremely neutral oak for 5 months. Which although non-standard, makes all the difference...and the difference is a more serious rosé with depth, mouthfeel, and body.
This rosé is a wonderful color, deeper than typical; think sun-washed red coral or the lighter side of a pink lady apple. On the nose, it's got citrus and cantaloupe, and the palate delivers raspberry, bramble berry, and a touch of lemon zest or maybe even lime, if you've been hanging out in the Florida Keys.
Think of it as a porch wine that's grown up and has two post graduate degrees in French Literature...and then open another bottle.
